Incidents allegedly provoked by NYPD officers include shoving protesters, using pepper spray on peaceful protesters and driving a police vehicle into a crowd of Brooklyn protesters. O’Meara said police officers had “been left out of the discussion” during his Tuesday remarks....

The New York State Department of Health issued a health advisory to warn about the increasing number of hospitalizations on Friday. In a statement, the department noted the majority of pediatric hospitalizations are among those who have not received the COVID-19 vaccine. About half of the admissions are children younger than five years old, and are therefore ineligible to get vaccinated, according to the statement. When it comes to older children, there have been some breakthrough hospitalizations — though the majority remain unvaccinated....

Videos emerged early this week showing a man, later identified as pro-Trump provocateur Dion Cini, being swarmed by several staffers and members of the public as he waved a large “MAGA” flag around New York City’s Wollman Rink. The Trump Organization has owned the Central Park skating rink in partnership with the city since the mid-1980s. City officials had initially said Sunday would be the final day of skating at both Central Park rinks, Wollman and Lasker, as they sever city contract ties with the former president’s company....

In a statement emailed to Newsweek, Shea expressed that the NYPD is “deeply saddened” over their “first Coronavirus pandemic casualty.” The deceased, Dennis C. Dickson, was a custodian assigned to Police HQ and a 14-year veteran of the NYPD family, he said. Dickson passed away on Thursday at Kings County Hospital. “Mr. Dickson was a revered member of the custodial staff at Police Headquarters once spending 17 days at the headquarters building during Super Storm Sandy assisting with emergency cleanup operations,” Shea added....

A spokesperson for the NYPD told Newsweek via email that a 23-year-old male was taken into custody and officers are continuing to investigate the situation. According to police, Waseem Awawdeh, 23, of 5th Avenue, Brooklyn, N.Y., was arrested on charges of: assault/hate crime, gang assault, menacing, aggravated harassment/hate crime and criminal possession of a weapon. Less than two weeks after the court decision opened the door for college athletes to receive a small portion of the millions of dollars they help generate, several attorneys told The Associated Press they believe the NCAA should now attack that cap. Wilken ruled Aug. 8 that the NCAA violated antitrust law by restricting schools from providing money beyond current scholarship limits to athletes. She said schools should be allowed to put up to $5,000 per year of competition into a trust fund for football players and men’s basketball players, money that could be collected once they are finished with school....

Malcolm LaVergne, who represents the former NFL player, asked the Nevada Supreme Court to overturn a $33.5 million settlement owed to Fred Goldman, the father of Ron Goldman.
