The Florida Panthers leapfrogged Buffalo to win the top pick on Tuesday. Buffalo has the No. 2 overall pick; they'd finished with the worst record in the league by 14 points and a 25 percent chance at winning the top pick. Rounding out the top five: Edmonton, Calgary and the New York Islanders, as expected. The 2014 NHL draft will be held on June 27-28 in Philadelphia. Buffalo, behind new GM Tim Murray, began a rebuild this season and amassed a serious collection of picks and prospects, but the on-ice product was brutal....

Take Seth Jones off the list. The Blue Jackets on Wednesday cut a six-year, $32.4 million deal with Jones, a rising player at 21 who could be the team’s best blue-line player for years to come. According to The Athletic, San Jose and the All-Star defenseman are continuing to work on a contract extension which would keep Karlsson with the team for a very long time. The report states there is a belief the Sharks are willing to offer Karlsson a contract somewhere close to what Kings defenseman Drew Doughty got last summer. That would be eight years and $88 million. The Sharks are the only team that can offer Karlsson an eight-year deal, and they might be the only one willing to give him an offer in the $11 million range on average annual value....

As of Dec. 18, more than 60 players are in the league’s COVID protocols and five teams — the Bruins, Predators, Flames, Panthers and Avalanche — are on pause through the league’s upcoming holiday break, which will end Dec. 26.
