“I take responsibility for what I said and there are no excuses for those comments. I’m so sorry,” she said in a statement obtained by Newsweek from director of communications Sophie Gilchrist. “I ask for forgiveness from my colleagues and from the residents of this city that I love so much. In the end, it is not my apologies that matter most; it will be the actions I take from this day forward. I hope that will give me the opportunity to make amends. Therefore, effective immediately I am resigning as President of the Los Angeles City Council.”
The announcement comes shortly after the Los Angeles Times obtained a leaked audio recording where Martinez could be heard making what the California/Hawaii NAACP conference called “racist.”
According to the Los Angeles Times, Martinez spoke about Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón and said, “He’s with the Blacks.” The Los Angeles Times said that they obtained the audio recording from an unknown Reddit user and that the conversation at hand took place in October of last year.
Martinez also discussed fellow Los Angeles City Council member Mike Bonin and said, “Bonin thinks he’s f**king Black,” according to the Los Angeles Times. The Times also reported that Martinez made remarks about Bonin’s son.
Following her remarks, many called for Martinez’s resignation, including several council members and the California/Hawaii NAACP conference.
“The President of the LA City Council, and all of the involved Councilmembers should immediately resign. This kind of overt racism has no place in political discourse. We clearly know where your heart and mind are, and both of them are corroded with the rust of racism and hate,” Rick Callender, president of the CA/HI State Conference of the NAACP, said in the statement.

Bonin also released a statement this weekend in which he said, “We are appalled, angry and absolutely disgusted that Nury Martinez attacked our son with horrific racist slurs, and talked about her desire to physically harm him.”
“The City Council needs to remove her as Council President immediately, and she needs to resign from office,” the statement added.
Newsweek reached out to Bonin for further comment.
In addition to those comments, a post from 2020 in which Martinez showed support for the Black Lives Matter movement resurfaced on Monday.
“Today we intrdcd a motion to cut funding to the LAPD, as we reset our priorities in the wake of the murder of #GeorgeFloyd & the #BlackLivesMatter call that we all support to end racism. This is just one small step. We cannot talk about change, we have to be about change,” Martinez said in a 2020 tweet.
