MORE: Stars learn French Open paths | Federer pulls out
Rain in southwest Paris affected proceedings on the first day of play in the French capital Sunday, and inclement weather delayed matters further Monday.
Play was postponed until 1 p.m. (local time), and the Wimbledon Roof account’s criticism of the deficiencies at Roland Garros prompted a jovial Twitter spat with the French Open’s official account.
Both the Australian Open and Wimbledon have at least one court with a roof, while the Arthur Ashe Stadium at Flushing Meadows, N.Y., will be fitted with a retractable roof in time for this year’s U.S. Open.
The Roland Garros account had a good-natured response to that barb, pointing to one of the culinary delights on offer at the tournament.
But the Wimbledon Roof immediately quipped that baguettes would be no help in getting play resumed.
And Roland Garros appeared to concede defeat, replying ‘well played’.
Not to be left out, an account for the unfinished U.S. Open roof also got involved.
Plans to install a roof on Court Philippe-Chatrier have been drawn up, although it is unclear when such work would be completed.
