The Asheville Police Department shared a video of the incident on Twitter on Tuesday, with the caption, “Driver tried to run over man on side of the road, hit his cart containing his belongings & cat.”
In the video, which, according to police, was captured by a witness, a white pickup truck can be seen speeding off of the road and onto a grassy area. The truck can then be seen heading towards the man, who is walking on the grass with a cart a few feet away from him.
The truck is seen smashing into the cart and eventually driving away from the scene. According to a press release from the Asheville Police Department, the driver hit a cart belonging to the other man, and that his cat was inside the cart.
No injuries were reported in the incident. “Both the man and the cat were not hurt,” police said.
The police department’s press release said that the incident occurred on the side of exit 44 of I-40 East on Monday around 5 p.m.
Police described him as “a white man, 30-40 years old, wearing a light-colored t-shirt, and ball cap.” The names of the driver and other man involved in the incident have not been released.
The truck was identified by the Asheville Police Department as a Ford F-150 with a license plate that read RCL-8595.
Asheville Police Department spokeswoman Christina Hallingse told the Associated Press that police were informed by witnesses the man driving the pickup truck was doing doughnuts in the grass and attempted to hit the other man several times.
Despite the driver’s numerous attempts to hit the other man, witnesses told police that they didn’t notice anything that sparked the incident and Hallingse told the Associated Press police believe it was spontaneous.
The incident remains under investigation and the Asheville Police Department is asking the public for help and provided several ways for residents in the area to provide the department with anonymous tips, including calling the department at 828-252-1110.
Newsweek reached out to the Asheville Police Department for further comment, but did not receive a response in time for publication.
