On the official Pokémon Go blog, Niantic detailed the immediate and upcoming updates that will be implemented into the popular mobile game regarding Mega Evolution, including the Mega Energy requirement.

Here’s what the blog said:

When Mega Evolution was introduced to Pokémon Go a week ago, many trainers felt the requirements to Mega Evolve their Pokémon was too high and the amount of time it stays in its Mega form was too short.

The Mega Energy requirement to Mega Evolve a Pokémon that has already Mega Evolved before has decreased. The amount of Mega Energy that Trainers receive from winning Mega Raids has increased.

Here are a few adjustments that we’re working on implementing.

Trainers needed 200 Mega Energy to Mega Evolve Blastoise, Venusaur and both Charizards, something that seemed like a huge ask from players. The amount of Mega Energy earned in Mega Raids depended on the amount of time it took for you and friends to clear it. The average Mega Energy received from Mega Raids was about 40, which means trainers needed to complete five Mega Raids just to unlock a Pokémon’s Mega Evolution.

After the initial unlock, it took 100 Mega Energy to Mega Evolve one of the Kanto Starters and 50 for Beedrill.

Considering that trainers can only do one free Mega Raid per day if they are in its vicinity, many players felt this new feature would benefit those who could use real money to purchase more Raid Passes in the in-game shop.

The Mega Evolution changes keep the initial requirements the same, but after clearing that, the Kanto Starters now only need 40 Mega Energy to Mega Evolve and Beedrill only needs 20. Also, the amount of Mega Energy received in Mega Raids has increased to the 50-90 range, up from the previous 35-55 range.

As for other ways to earn Mega Energy, battling in Mega Raids was the only option until the first Mega Evolution event went into effect on Tuesday. Trainers could earn 5 Mega Energy for completing certain field research tasks. Niantic is now looking to find more ways for trainers to earn this valuable resource.
