NFL Week 1 weather updates
The Wet
Ravens @ Dolphins. A chance for a pop-up shower or storm here – a very typical Florida pattern. Wind will remain light, so the combination of lower-end rain chances and light winds makes weather unlikely to be a major factor here.
Bengals @ Seahawks. This is our best chance of seeing rain on Week 1. Not expecting a full-on downpour here, but scattered off and on showers are possible throughout the game. With lighter rain more likely, I don’t think you need to avoid the passing attack here, but it’s a bit less than ideal. In similar weather games in Seattle we’ve seen total passing yards drop by about five percent, with negligible impacts to total score and rushing yards (stat courtesy of my NFL WeatherEdge tool, available on RotoGrinders.com).

The Windy
Good news on this front: No games currently project for more than a 10-mph sustained wind. To see wind impacts to the offense I generally look for winds of 15 mph or stronger, and we’re not even close to that threshold this week.

The Hot
Chiefs @ Jaguars. It is going to be extremely hot Sunday afternoon in Jacksonville, even by summer Florida standards. Game time temps will be in the upper 90s, feels-like temps will be over 100, and actual on-field temps (including the heat of the sun) will likely be at least 115 degrees. With this being Week 1, I expect both defenses will wear out fairly easily in this heat, so I think this favors the offensive side of the ball, especially late as temps keep climbing and fatigue sets in. There’s also good chance that we see some players on both sides of the ball needing some extra fluids/IV’s/breaks.
Giants @ Cowboys. Speaking of hot, temps in Arlington should be right around 100 degrees at kickoff. Fortunately for both teams, Jerry’s World comes equipped with a lovely retractable roof, and I fully expect they will be using it.
That’s all the NFL weather that you need to know for Week 1. As always, you can see updated hourly forecasts for each game at RotoGrinders.
