Seven days on from the Denver Broncos’ 14-10 win over the Atlanta Falcons, the NFL preseason gets underway in earnest on Thursday night with 11 games on the slate.

It all kicks off when the two New York rivals, the Giants and the Jets, collide at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

While the two teams share tenancy of the arena, matchups between the Big Apple rivals are relatively rare occasions. The two teams have played each other in preseason in the last three years, but have not met in the regular season or in the playoff since December 2015, when the Jets won in overtime.

Prior to that, the Giants had won five games in a row and lead the all-time regular season series 8-5.

History, however, will count for little on Thursday and even less so this season as both franchises desperately look for improvements after a dismal campaign last year.

Here’s everything you need to know about Thursday night.

What to look out for

The Jets went 4-12 last season, finishing bottom of the AFC East and missing the postseason for the eighth consecutive season. The offseason, however, has brought major changes, with head coach Todd Bowles and general manager Mike Maccagnan both fired.

Former Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase has replaced Bowles, while Joe Douglas has stepped into Maccagnan’s shoes.

The graphic below, provided by Statista, illustrates how the salary cap in the NFL has increased over the last 16 years.

Changes haven’t been limited to the front office, as the Jets have made big moves in free agency. After missing the whole of last season because of a contract dispute with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Le’Veon Bell signed a four-year deal worth $52.5 million with the Jets.

The 27-year-old accumulated 1,850 yards from scrimmage in the two seasons he played in and the Jets will be hoping he can hit the ground running and give their offense a new dimension.

Aside from Bell, the Jets have signed wide receiver Jamison Crowder, guard Kelechi Osemele, running back Ty Montgomery and linebacker C.J. Mosley.

For all the new recruits, however, Sam Darnold remains crucial to the franchise’s expectations. The third overall pick of the 2018 draft threw for 2,865 yards and 17 interceptions in his rookie season, but completed just 57.7 percent of his passes.

The Giants also have a young quarterback, after trading up to select Duke’s Daniel Jones with the sixth overall pick in this year’s draft. The decision raised a few eyebrows, particularly as Jones isn’t expected to start ahead of Eli Manning and the Giants did not select a quarterback in the first round a year earlier, when the talent on offer in the position was a lot higher.

At 38 years of age, Manning is back and head coach Pat Shurmur will hope the veteran can be more consistent than last season. The two-time Super Bowl winner threw for 4,299 yards and 21 touchdowns but was sacked an incredible 47 times.

Unfortunately for Manning, he has lost one of his main attacking weapon, with Odell Beckham Jr. traded to the Cleveland Browns in the offseason.

The star wide receiver’s departure means the Giants will be even more relying on Saquon Barkley, who set the NFL alight in his first season. The running back was named Rookie of the Year and was a Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro selection after a standout first season.

Odds

According to figures compiled by Draft Kings, the New York Jets are a -1.5-point favorite, while the New York Giants are 11/10 to cover the spread.

The Jets are 73/100 favorite (-137.00 in moneyline terms), while the Giants are 28/25 underdogs and the over/under bar for total points is set at 33.
