Before entering his third season with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2017, Fowler allegedly failed to fully stop at a stop sign at an apartment complex in St. Petersburg, Florida, and almost caused a collision with another vehicle.

The Dallas Morning News reported that 55-year-old Alvin Trotman witnessed the near-accident and made some sort of exclamatory comment, to which Fowler took offense. The arrest report states that Fowler then exited his vehicle and struck Trotman, broke his eyeglasses, and threw his grocery bag into a nearby lake during the altercation.

In a press conference during Jaguars training camp, Fowler made a public apology at the time, saying, “First, I would like to start off by apologizing to the organization of the Jacksonville Jaguars and also the city of Jacksonville for my actions, for what happened, what went down.”

“I just want [to] let people know and everybody know that’s not me as a person. I’m a better person than that, and it won’t happen again,” he added, according to WTLV News.

He pleaded no contest to misdemeanor battery, criminal mischief, and petty theft charges in 2018 for the incident, the Morning News reported.

A civil jury ordered the fine after a four-day trial in St. Petersburg, with $150,000 of the $280,000 fine as punishment for the altercation. Fowler only faced a one-game suspension from the National Football League (NFL) over the incident back in 2018.

A civil lawsuit against Fowler was also filed in 2018 by Trotman, who claimed that he “suffered a torn rotator cuff and exacerbation of cervical spine injuries, among other injuries” due to Fowler knocking him to the ground.

“I don’t think I have a maturity issue,” Fowler told the press in 2018. “It’s just some things, just learning and growing. Like when I talk to them, I’m a professional. People are going to push me to that point. I just have to be the bigger person and realize who I am and do that.”

As Fowler signed with the Dallas Cowboys this year, the fine will be the legal conclusion to the altercation.

Recently, another NFL player was arrested, as former Miami Dolphin Mark Walton and another accomplice allegedly held a man at gunpoint and stole his Rolex watch in February.

Newsweek reached out to the NFL and the St. Petersburg Police for additional comment.
