Compensatory picks are awarded based on the players that a team lost and gained in the previous offseason. The league predetermines a list of free agents labeled as “compensatory free agents” (CFA). The number of compensatory selections a team receives depends on the number of these types of players they lose or gain. The league determines who is labeled a CFA based on salary, playing time and postseasons honors.
The 32 picks land at the end of rounds 3-7 and, as of 2017, can be included in trades.
The Arizona Cardinals, Houston Texans, Denver Broncos and Bengals were awarded the highest picks at the end of the third round: Nos. 97, 98, 99 and 100, respectively. They were handed out based on the losses of Calais Campbell, A.J. Bouye, Russell Okung and Andrew Whitworth in 2017 free agency.
