The arrival of Week 14 means there are only five weeks left in the expanded schedule to teams to either finish the season strong in playoff position or create something on which to build for next year. While there are many with hopes to earn the No. 1 through 7 seeds in both conferences, there are more teams headed to think more about the 2022 draft. Here’s how SN looks at that intersection and how all the teams stack up against each other from 1-32 now:...

That’s not the same story for several teams in the muddle middle, however, as a string of upsets did cause some considerable shakeup. As the playoff picture comes more into focus, there’s a little separation but also a bigger clump of mediocrity. As for the middle, and the races for the wild-card spots in both the AFC and NFC? That’s a lot more interesting, as many positions between Nos. 7 and 27 have changed. So the betting lines for these games are probably as close as the preseason gets to what we’d see in the regular season. This week, we have one game on Thursday, five on Friday, eight on Saturday and two on Sunday. Seven of these games will be televised live – three on NFL Network, two on CBS, and on Sunday, one each on Fox and NBC. While there are some wagering angles from which we believe we can profit during the exhibition slate – and we’ll discuss some of those over the week, of course – we recommend keeping your bets small relative to their size once meaningful games commence....

After a busy offseason, Week 1 of the preseason gives fans the opportunity to see high-profile rookies take an NFL field for the first time, while a number of familiar faces will take the field in new places. On Thursday, Aug. 11, Giants fans will get their first look at first-round picks Kayvon Thibodeaux and Evan Neal when the team travels to Foxborough to take on the Patriots. Less than 24 hours later, Lions fans will get to see Aidan Hutchinson against a rebuilding Falcons team, while the Jets’ duo of top-10 picks, Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner and Garrett Wilson, will be in Philadelphia to face the Eagles....

The league also drew a C+ for gender hiring practices in the annual report by The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport released Tuesday. Overall, the total number of women and people of color at or above the vice president level in the NFL increased by 11 percent. The league received an overall grade of B. The institute says it issues the grades in relation to the overall patterns in society....

Those in stripes on the field receive little to no praise for making correct calls, and any incorrect call is put under the spotlight. But while praise might be hard to come by, money is not. The officials out there are coming away with a nice paycheck for their efforts each week, and the Super Bowl is the biggest single dollar figure they’ll see after a game. The big change: the much-maligned and ambiguous term “probable” will no longer be used. The league also will be playing games in Los Angeles for the first time since 1994. The Rams are back in the LA Memorial Coliseum after moving from St. Louis. The team will play there until its new stadium in Inglewood is completed in 2019....

The NFL had no mercy on the Denver Broncos in their 2017 schedule. The strength of schedule was challenging enough — the hardest in the league. They have to climb through two teams that showed themselves as title contenders last season when healthy. And they have, well, issues at quarterback, that may or may not be resolved this year. Now new coach Vance Joseph gets a schedule that’s a beast, in the beginning, middle and end, not an easy feat....

In a reported move, Miami has sent offensive lineman Laremy Tunsil and wide receiver Kenny Stills to Houston. The Dolphins will receive ‘a huge package’ centered around an array of picks which will include multiple first-round selections, according to NFL media, which cited unidentified league sources. Miami will now have four first-round picks and four second-rounders, reports noted, as well as two third-round selections and a possible third-round compensation pick....

The Baltimore Ravens tightened their grip on the AFC North with a 49-13 shellacking of the Cincinnati Bengals, as Lamar Jackson strengthened his candidature to be this season’s MVP. The second-year quarterback completed 15 of his 17 passes attempts for three touchdowns and zero interceptions, finishing the game with a 158.3 rating, the highest attainable mark. Jackson also, who also added a career-long 47-yard touchdown run, became the only the second player in NFL history along with Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to record a passer rating of 158....
