The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Wednesday gave emergency use authorization for the Novavax vaccine. While the vaccine is on track to become the fourth authorized inoculation against COVID-19, public health officials and others say it could play an important role as the pandemic drags on. Both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, the most widely used, rely on messenger RNA (mRNA). These newer technologies prompt the recipient’s cells to produce a small amount of the virus that causes COVID-19, generating an immune system response....
The vaccine was effective against several variants, including the variant first discovered in the U.K., which has been spreading in the U.S. and affecting high-risk groups. Nearly 30,000 adults in the U.S. and Mexico participated in the study. Two-thirds of the participants received two doses of the vaccine three weeks apart, while the rest of the participants received placebo shots. The study saw 77 cases of COVID-19 across all participants....

Though the birds will be monitored and fed clean carrion (stillborn calves) in the wild, they will have no direct human contact....

Chicago Police Department Superintendent David Brown addressed the incident in a press conference on Monday, which was shared on the department’s Facebook page. He said officers responded to a call regarding the woman who was laying “unclothed” in the street. “As officers tried to seek and render aid to this woman, try to figure out why she was laying in the street, she charged the officer, assaulted the officer, got in his squad car, took the squad car, drove off, had an accident,” Brown said, adding that the officer was run over and suffered injuries....

Danalee Pascua could face up to four years in prison for the death of Elisa Serna, who died in 2019 at the Las Colinas Detention Facility in Santee, California. Pascua is accused of not checking Serna’s vital signs and leaving her on the floor for an hour before returning to perform what prosecutors are calling “futile lifesaving measures.” The sheriff’s department initially said that Serna’s death was attributed to complications of drug abuse, but her family accused jail staff of knowing about her heroin usage before booking her....
The nurse, who works for Britain’s National Health Service in the Hywel Dda University Health Board area of Wales, told the BBC she received one dose of the vaccine last month. But three weeks after the first shot—before receiving the second one—the nurse, who wished to remain anonymous, began to experience “quite severe symptoms,” including a bad cough, high temperature and breathlessness. Boatwright, 28, was taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan from Rikers Island jail complex on Thursday for a medical issue, the city’s Department of Correction said. Officials said he was pronounced dead Friday just after 5:30 a.m. In a statement, Corrections Commissioner Vincent Schiraldi said that Boatwright’s death “is a heartbreaking loss at the end of a very difficult year. My deepest sympathy goes out to Mr. Boatwright’s loved ones....
Outgoing Mayor Bill de Blasio recently announced plans to get rid of the program for gifted and talented students in the nation’s largest school district. But Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams said in a Friday interview on CNN that he would seek to preserve program and increase opportunities for advanced learning. Adams also said de Blasio can’t get rid of the program until next year, when a new mayor will be in office, according to the AP....
The former presidential candidate and former sanitation commissioner campaigned together in Flushing, Queens and Chinatown, Manhattan over the weekend to urge constituents to support the other candidate with their second vote. “You don’t have to pick between Andrew Yang or Kathryn Garcia,” Garcia said in Queens on Saturday. “You can vote for both of us.” One day later, the two leading candidates met with a warm hug in Chinatown’s Kim Law Square ahead of a rally to encourage voter turnout....
