Oakland improved to 3-2 with a second consecutive win and are now second in the AFC West behind the 4-1 Kansas City Chiefs, while the Bears slipped to 3-2 and are third in the NFC North, behind the 4-1 Green Bay Packers and the 2-1-1 Detroit Lions....

That makes it another good week o expand our latest Sporting News first-round 2021 NFL mock draft. Now we know picks No. 1 through No. 30, with the Packers and Bills joining those eliminated from Super Bowl 55 contention over the weekend’s championship games. Here’s breaking down all the projected selections, based on the updated draft order according to Tankathon: NFL mock draft 2021 Jacksonville Jaguars (1-15) Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson (6-6, 220 pounds)...

But that’s not the real reason it will be interesting. Monday’s mock draft will go in the order of Thursday’s actual draft, except the 2020 draft prospects won’t be the players chosen. Teams will choose legends and hall of fame players, and teams can make trades for the all-time greats. That’s what needs to be shown in a Monday Night Football slot next week instead of two, 30-minute episodes of Peyton’s Places (which is actually entertaining), followed by the replay of a 2005 regular-season game between Peyton Manning’s Indianapolis Colts and Tom Brady’s New England Patriots....

Atlanta Falcons at New York Giants, 1 p.m. ET, Fox Following a 45-14 thrashing of Washington last week, New York will be looking for its third straight win. Atlanta’s high-octane offense speaks for itself, but the same doesn’t go for its No. 29 ranked defense. Multiple Vegas sports books have the Falcons as +185 underdogs, implying just a 35 percent chance of winning. AccuScore data leans much more heavily toward the visiting team than does Vegas....

According to NFL Media, citing unidentified sources, the session initially slated to take place for three days has ended already after just one, but the two sides are scheduled to reconvene July 29. The report noted those in attendance included NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith, a number of owners from the NFL’s Management Council Executive Committee and a number of players from the NFLPA’s Executive Committee, including Richard Sherman, Russell Okung and Adam Vinatieri....

The AFC favorites handled their business, with the early surprise results coming in the NFC. As the stakes are raised for the games and the competition gets more compelling, there should be more exciting action packed into four matchups. The 49ers, Bills, Seahawks and Cowboys based on those lines were considered safe picks over the Cardinals, Redskins, Buccaneers and Giants, respectively. Those are the closest things we get to painless predictions in Week 9, and even they are not exactly easy....

The Jets’ third-string quarterback came off the bench last week to make his first start of the season and put up sensational numbers in leading the club to a victory over the Chicago Bears. Here’s the thing about cult heroes, though. In the long run, they tend to be more cult than hero. Last season, White came off the bench to lead the Jets to a win over the eventual AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals....

In the divisional round of the playoffs the Rams, Saints, Chiefs and Patriots were all victorious and are one game closer to securing a spot in Super Bowl 53. The Rams beat out the Cowboys 30-22, behind a big performance from both C.J. Anderson and Todd Gurley. The duo combined for 238 yards rushing yards and the three Rams touchdowns of the game. The Saints held off the reining Super Bowl champions, the Eagles, to win 20-14....
