New York state senator Zellnor Myrie and Assemblywoman Diana Richardson filed a federal civil-rights lawsuit against the city Monday, piling on the latest batch of litigation against NYPD stemming from the department’s response to protests in the wake of George Floyd’s death last summer. The lawsuit claims police officers detained the two lawmakers illegally and violated their free-speech rights as they were assaulted during a peaceful protest. The NYPD confirmed that the officer has been suspended without pay after a video of him using the tannoy to express support of Trump while arguing with a member of the public went viral on social media. “Trump 2020. On Thursday, three NYPD officers were in the Whole Foods in Manhattan’s Union Square when they saw the unidentified woman being held by store security. According to reports, the trio had stepped in to get cold drinks, as temperatures on July 4 approached 90 degrees. A fellow customer tweeted a photo of the incident, showing the cops at the cash register with the woman, who has her face in her hands....

The post, shared by the Sergeants Benevolent Association (SBA), appeared to show the arrest records of Chiara de Blasio, 25, who the New York Post reported was arrested by officers on Saturday night while taking part in a Manhattan protest. According to the Post, she was held after blocking traffic on Broadway and refusing to move after officials deemed protesters to be an “unlawful assembly.” The SBA, led by sergeant Ed Mullins, has a well-documented history of criticizing the elected official and recently “declared war” on him via the Twitter account, prompting an investigation by the NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau, Gothamist reported....

Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets to protest against the death of 20-year-old Daunte Wright, who was shot and killed by Minnesota police officer Kim Potter on Sunday during a traffic stop. Potter has been charged with second-degree manslaughter. Friday’s protest was mostly peaceful, according to ABC7 News, but a small number of demonstrators smashed windows of some local businesses, while at least one vehicle was set on fire in the showroom of a Honda dealership in the 3300 block of the city’s Broadway area....

Armando Nieto, executive director of the Community Food and Justice Coalition, said it was “way past time” that marginalized groups were offered support—despite criticism from some that the monthly payments are aimed at residents who are Black, indigenous or people of color (BIPOC). Under the privately funded Oakland Resilient Families scheme, a BIPOC family of three earning less than $59,000 a year will be eligible to receive $500 each month for at least 18 months, providing a guaranteed income to some of the poorest people in the city....

But here in the Delta Tuesday night the racial divide was especially stark. According to exit polls, Obama outpolled Clinton among black voters 91-9. White voters preferred Clinton by a slightly narrower 72-21 percent margin. If the outcome and the racial math were predictable (African-Americans accounted for roughly half the Democratic primary vote), Mississippians did provide a few modest surprises at the ballot box....

During the Rams’ 23-20 win over the Bengals, Beckham suffered a non-contact knee injury. He had to be helped off the field late in the first half and was officially ruled out for the game after halftime.
